The most famous goal in Cardiff City's football history

With all the expectation that a Cup Final can produce the match started and continued quite slowly. Seventeen minutes remained of what had been a disappointingly dour match when fate took a hand - or rather an elbow. From a Keenor throw in on the left, McLachlan passed the ball inside to Ferguson. The Scotsman was known for his sharp shooting from the edge of the box so he let fly - this time from just inside the area. The Arsenal goalkeeper Lewis, from Maerdy in Rhondda, crouched down to collect the shot as Davies moved in on him. Unnerved perhaps, Lewis allowed the ball to escape from his grasp and it rolled slowly over the line into the net - it was suggested off the keepers elbow. Initially, there was widespread confusion about the scorer. Who would be credited with the goal - Ferguson, Davies or even poor Lewis? By Monday morning, it was official, Ferguson, but at that moment in the game it didn't really matter. City were ahead and it was a lead they were not willing to surrender. When the final whistle blew, thousands of supporters ran onto the famous turf to celebrate the historic victory.

Back in Cardiff, the crowds who had gathered in Cathays Park to listen to radio commentary of the game on loudspeakers fixed to trees and lamposts around City Hall, could barely contain their excitement as that final whistle was to signal the first and only time to date the famous cup was to leave England and travel its historic journey to Wales.
